The skill, fun and adventure associated with the sport of
skiing is unmatched. What can be more thrilling that zipping
down the icy slopes with the cold air making your cheeks
rosy? However, everybodies favorite winter sport often comes
with a whopping price tag. Traveling to a winter haven and
lodging in an expensive ski resort coupled with expensive
equipment can blow a big hole in your pockets. But if you
plan smart, you can stretch your budget to cover several
runs of the slope instead of blowing up all your money on a
single expensive ski trip.
By far the most expensive item when it comes to skiing is
equipment. Between appropriate cold weather clothing,
skis, poles, boots, and all the other accessories, one
could rack up quite a hefty bill before any travel plans
have been made. Before setting out on your adventure, ask
your friends if they have equipment you can borrow. Most
ski resorts rent necessary equipment, including skis, ski
poles, boots, and snow boards. If you are planning one or
two trips to the slopes, then by all means, rent! However,
if you are a die-hard skier, then it will be more economical
in the long run to own your own equipment.
Then, you need the appropriate attire to protect you from
the weather. This clothing can be quite expensive, but if
you are a thrifty shopper you can find items in unexpected
places like your local thrift stores or sporting goods
resale shops. They offer great deals on pre-used items,
which may include state-of-the-art skis, rugged and warm ski
bibs and jackets, and many such quality items. Look out for
top deals and special sales at sporting goods stores as well
as newspaper classified advertisements, online auction
sites, and yard sales. You will find skiing equipment
without blowing your budget.
Once the equipment is organized, you need to plan the travel
and lodging. Staying overnight at a ski resort may be
expensive so try a day trip. You can join up with the
community groups, organizations and churches who routinely
host such trips to local ski resorts. Such trips can give
you the opportunity to save on gas for the drive and travel
with a group of people. You will also not have any lodging
bills because you can return the same day. Even if you
prefer to plan your own ski vacation, there are great deals
offered by some smaller resorts that you can check out. They
often offer packages that include hotel rooms, airport
transfers and lift tickets. You should also check out what
is available on popular discount travel websites. Traveling
with a group of family and friends can also help to reduce
costs apart from making the trip more enjoyable.
However you choose to plan your skiing vacation, spend your
budget wisely! You will enjoy a thrifty trip just as much
as a budget-buster without having to worry about the bills
when you return home.
