Snowboard Safety Insures Snowboard Fun!

Snowboarding is becoming more popular every year with
riders of all ages. There are probably as many reasons
for people taking up snowboarding as there are riders.
When snowboarding, rule one is be careful. Watch out for
other snowboarders, skiiers, trees, rocks, and numerous
other obstacles that can lie hidden on the slopes. Don't
ride out-of-bounds and pay attention to weather and
snow conditions.
One of the skiiers' pet peeves is that snowboard riders
attempt runs that are way too hard which inconveniences
and often endangers those for whom a run on that
particular slope is appropriate. Know your limits, and
stay within them for a safer, more fun ride.
Avalanches are a concern to all of us who ride or ski.
Check snow reports and weather reports before hitting
the slopes. If there have been recent big swings in
temperature or a big snow that has fallen on top of snow
that has melted and refrozen several times, you might
be better off staying home.
Keep warm and dry while riding your snowboard. Dress
in layers so that you provide yourself with extra
insulation when it's colder and the ability to "lighten
up" when you're warmer. Layers closest to your body need
to breathe and wick moisture away from the skin. Outer
layers should be water and wind resistant. Wool and
polypropelene are good. Cotton is not.
Take care of your feet by wearing socks that keep your
feet warm even when saturated with moisture. You can
wear socks in layers, too. Your boots should allow you
some "wiggle-room" inside. Poor blood circulation to
the feet can result in frostbite or neuropathy.
Your skin is your largest organ. Take care of it with
sunscreen and lip balm that are of an appropriate UPF.
Protect your eyes from sun and wind with UV-resistant,
wrap-around sunglasses or goggles.
If you want to drink and have a good time, stay off of
Slopes! Alcohol impairs coordination, inhibits judgment,
and accelerates dehydration. Both your body and brain
will benefit more from some high-quality H2O!
Those of us who snowboard love a great ride! Great rides
are the result of common sense and sound preparation
as much as they are about having a great board.
