TAKE UP SKIING
by Carrie Wilmont

If you have never tried to ski, you are in for a real
treat. Making your way down the slopes with crisp, clean
air and the beautiful snow under your feet is like nothing
you have ever experienced. However, while being excited,
there is also a feeling of being anxious. Keep in mind
that once you have taken lessons and started to ski, you
will never want to stop.

One mistake you should never make is getting a companion
or relative who is a proficient skier to provide you with
lessons when you first start. They may be a master of
their slopes, but they may not be able to control their
tempers or make the learning experience stress-free for
you as they are too close to you. Two days worth of
lessons with instructors at the resort are a far better
option as it will be far less dangerous and much more
pleasurable.

Why are lessons with professional trainers best? You can
opt for one on one training, which is a little heavy on
the wallet. Most ski training sessions take place in group
so you are with other learners that know just as much
about skiing as you do. This will help you to relax, enjoy
and feel at home. Two days is normally all you need to get
you going but feel free to take more if you wish.

The first day is often a full day where you learn all the
fundamentals so you stay safe on the slopes. Then the
second day, whether a half or full day will involve you
going up the lift, learning how to get on and off the
right way. From there, you and the entire class will make
your way down the mountain, getting your first real
glimpse of what snow skiing is all about.

When first starting out, you do not need to buy any
equipment. In fact, it would better not to simply because
you will not have enough experience to know what to buy.
Until you decide if this is the sport for you, you can
rent quality skis, boots, poles, and other ski equipment
right there at the slopes. For one thing, equipment
rental today involves quality equipment so you know you
are skiing on the best. In addition, renting equipment
will save you money.

How do you know what ski stuff you need? Leave it to the
professionals at the ski hire store. The will provide you
with all the equipment you need to have great fun on the
slopes but be safe and sound too. They will work out just
how much skill you have, check your shoe size, how tall
you are etc to make sure they give you everything you need.

You should make sure that your child partakes in lessons
if you take them with you and they have never been skiing
before. They should wear a safety helmet to protect them
against accidents and you should multi-layer their
clothing to enable them to strip off or redress as the
temperature changes on the slopes. Then they have the best
possible start and can really start to learn to ski
without having any concerns.
