Ideas for an Adventure Holiday.

Does the phrase "adventure holiday" make you shiver? Do
you think they're only for kids or health nuts? Not so!
There's an adventure vacation for just about every person
out there, so take advantage of all the great options.
There's no better holiday than one in which you discover
a new place and a new talent of your own!
Of course one form of adventure holiday is quite physically
demanding - it could involve mountain climbing or cross
country skiing for example. But another adventure holiday
could be visiting an unusual country where tourists are
just a little bit out of the ordinary, and you choose not
to stay in huge resort hotels.
After all, "adventure" doesn't just imply a physically
demanding activity--it can also be about challenging
yourself psychologically and emotionally, and learning
about yourself in the process.
So just like you would when thinking about any holiday, the
first step is to decide what you want from the experience.
There are adventures to be had at all ages, but clearly you
would not want to take your young children on an Everest
expedition. Some older folk might appreciate a slightly
more relaxed trip - others might not!
A good place to start your planning is by asking what
things you have always wanted to do or see. For example, if
you have always wanted to ride a horse, then there are a
lot of great horse-riding holidays available at home and
abroad. Many of these cater for beginners, so lack of
experience or knowledge is no barrier.
Maybe you have always wanted to visit a particular place -
the Parthenon in Greece, or the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem?
For many people this is truly an adventure, and also can be
the most rewarding type of holiday.
For trips like this there are travel companies that
specialize in slightly more adventurous trips - this
usually means that you may get to stay in more interesting
hotels and visit sights that are off-the-beaten track. Of
course if you are confident, you can sort yourself out -
buy your ticket, a guidebook and away you go!
What if you're not sure exactly where to go? The options
are endless. Many places that were unsafe for travelers
in the past are now prime destinations again, such as
beautiful Ethiopia, which is peaceful again after a long
civil war. Or consider steamy Chile, culturally-rich
Jordan or stunning Nepal.
To get the best of both worlds--a stimulating mental
journey and a physically challenging one, too--combine
both types of holiday. Visit an exotic location, then
explore it on foot rather than by car or bus. One
terrific idea is to travel to an island, like Madeira,
the "Garden Island," and camp out of doors.
You won't want to be burdened by tents and other baggage
during the day, so consider becoming part of an organized
tour, which will take care of your luggage while you are
enjoying the culture and scenery.
You can even have an adventure closer to home. What
about hiking some portion of the 2,174 mile-long
Appalachian Trail? You could also take the plunge
and try out that new activity you've always wanted
to do--white-water rafting, kayaking, or snorkeling.
Whether you choose to go on an adventure holiday with the
emphasis on physical activity or one that is more about
mental exploration, you should try to get into shape for
it. This includes being physically fit (particularly for
the more demanding holidays, but also for the sightseeing,
which can be tough), and getting your brain in gear by
doing some reading beforehand.
When you're prepared, you're in the best possible position
to enjoy your holiday to the fullest.
